The Swabian Museum of Rural Life ( is the open-air museum for the district of Swabia. In the middle of the Illerwinkel, 12 km south of Memmingen, it presents the diversity and way of life in old Swabia and Allgäu. Farms, workshops, stables, gardens and fields document lived history.
The expansion of the museum (currently 32 houses) is far from complete. From the Allgäu Uplands to northern Swabia, buildings are relocated from their original locations to Illerbeuren.
