The 22-hectare calcareous spring marsh is the largest contiguous source region in Bavaria. Surrounded by flowering wetland meadows, the marsh is home to rare and endangered animal and plant species. There is also a particular flower which only grows in this spot and does not exist anywhere else in the world: the crimson flowering thrift (Lat. Armeria purpurea), known locally as the “Riednelke” – the marsh pink, or “carnation of the fen”. The Friends' Association of the Benninge Marsh Museum has created an information centre for visitors, consisting of a museum, café, park and herb garden.  You won’t only hear the story of the rescue of this unique habitat; you can also experience the marsh thrift (Armeria purpurea), tree frog and company up close.
